Technical Problem: Help Required Desperately February 26, 2005

Posted by dhar in Misc.

My laptop has been behaving very wierdly for the past two days. Within an hour of switching it on, the laptop becomes sluggish. The task manager reveals that the process “explorer” is using 90 – 100 MB of memory and close to 60-70% CPU. On killing the process, the laptop returns back to its normal state but within an hour, it is back to its sluggish state. Rebooting does not help.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening and what I can do?

check if you have any large files on your desktop.. if yes, move them to C: or something.

waise, if you kill explorer, all ur desktop shud go blank.. so I dont know what you are killing. Are you sure its not some kind of spyware ? (explorer is the process that makes all those icons visible on ur desktop, I think )

The easiest thing would be to use ‘Adware which is available at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
‘ This would check if you have any kind of sypware on your system. You could also check to see if you have some strange ports open. This is done using TCPVIEW which is available http://www.sysinternals.com/. There is also another software which would take a look for rootkits @ http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/rootkitreveal.shtml.

Thanks for your ideas. Unfortunately, none of them worked. I finally went for a re-install today. šŸ˜¦

Defrag your machine and it should work fine. I had a similar problem and after the defrag it comparatively fast.
