Move Mount Fuji? May 24, 2005

I am currently reading “How Would You Move Mt. Fuji” and came across a nice puzzle in that book. The puzzle has two solutions, one being pretty obvious. See if you can crack both the solutions:

You are given a rectangular cake with a rectangular portion cut off. The cut off rectangular portion can be of any size/orientation and can be located anywhere on the cake.

How will you divide such a cake into two equal halves with just one slice of a knife.

I am not preparing for the MS interview. Was reading the book just for the heck of it.

cut it along its height in the middle, hope this should be the easy solution

apply the good ol’ geometry fundaes. Join the centre of the (original) cake with the centre of the cut piece and cut along that line.

wrong question.. it is NOT rectangular.. it should be cube or something… see if you use that word EVERYONE will tell you cut in 3d.. horizontally uda do.. of course assuming ki portion jo remove hua woh bhi cube hai.. (with same depth as cake)

te be more generic – A cuboid with a smaller cuboid cut out from newhere within.

Jeet you are right… But when I said a rectangular cake, I assume everyone will understand that it is the top view of the cake that is a rectangle.

Also both these answers are correct:

1. Slice along the height
2. Slice along the line joining the two centers
